Umfazi (wife) by Helena Santic Isakov

Imali yephepha (paper money),

the wind blew it away;

how am I going

to buy isinkwa (bread)

for my indoda? (husband)

I’ll think about that,

later before bed time;

I will make some muti (natural African love medicine)

for my beloved indoda.

Unkulunkulu (God)

will give him to me again;

I am hoping the best

for tomorrow.

This poem was written in South Africa and was written as above in a mixture of English and Isi Zulu, one of the 11 official languages of South Africa. I have put the translations of the Isi Zulu words in brackets immediately after the word.
