I recently bought a wonderful CD called A feather on the breath of God; sequences and Hymns by Saint Hildegard of Bingen, by the Gothic Voices directed by Christopher Page, with the great Soprano Emma Kirkby; on the Hyperion label (CDA66039). I wanted to post one of the songs on this blog but could not find any (there were others from a different LP). Then I found some of the Anonymous 4 recordings, and chose this track. I love the Anonymous 4 an American acapella quartet, based in New York, comprising Jacqueline Horner, Marsha Genensky, Susan Hellauer and Johanna Maria Rose, who studied and concentrated on performances of Medieval music, though have partaken in some modern compositions as well. they disbanded officially in 2004, but have come back together for specific projects since then. I was lucky enough to attend a wonderful serries of concerts by them at the Wigmore Hall in London, singing the first canticles of Dante’s Divine Comedy, which had been set especially for them, unfortunately they do not seem to have made a recording of this.
Hildegard von Bingen was born about 1098 and died on 17th September 1179, being a mystic, composing many religious tracts, plays, prayers, poems songs and plain chant. She had a series of dreams, which she wrote down, and here is an arrangement of the dream no.4; Love, sung by the Anonymus 4 off their 2004 disc The origin of fire, which came out on the Harmonia Mundi label, with thanks to decembre 9 and Youtube. Please enjoy:
