Women’s march 9th August 1956.

Marching down the long

police lined roads,

women protest inequalities.

Yesterday was a public holiday to commemorate the women’s march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria ( this was the same buildings at which President Mandela was sworn in). It was a selfless action, taken by women of all races against the apartheid laws, particularly the pass, and land laws. Though it could have been very traumatic, it went peacefully, with no one being shot, though led to many being arrested, and held with out trial, though some were charged and imprisoned.
